The Penitent Thief

This episode of Things Unseen focuses on the story of the penitent thief crucified alongside Jesus, who repented of his crimes on the cross and asked Jesus to remember him “when you come into your kingdom”. Known as St Dismas in some churches, he’s often overlooked in the story of the Passion.

But despite his small role in the biblical narrative, Dismas’ story of repentance and redemption holds deep significance, particularly for those who have walked troubled paths.

Joining Mark Dowd in the studio to discuss St Dismas are Rob Seabrook, author of Beneath the Tamarisk Tree, who delves into the character through his biblical fiction novel. Michael Emmett, a former convict, shares his personal reflection on the lessons of repentance and transformation found in Dismas’ story. And Sue Culver, a former prison chaplain, offers insights from her years of guiding inmates on their spiritual journeys.

Together, the panel discuss how redemption plays out in their everyday lives and how the thief’s story of repentance can inspire those in search of hope and transformation.
